Beginners 5 Weeks Pottery Class

This is a five weeks pottery class suitable for anyone fairly new to pottery and wishes to develop their skills in clay. A variety of hand-building techniques will be covered including throwing on the pottery wheel. Decorating and glazing your artwork are also explored in a way that encourages you to develop your creativity.
You will learn:
Pinching and decoration techniques
Press mould and decoration techniques
Coiling technique
Throwing on the pottery wheel - Introduction
Glazing your artwork
Clay, glazes, and firings are included.
Each class is run in a group of maximum 9 people. Complete beginners are welcome.

The class is small so your teacher is able to offer you full support and access to the studio facilities. Classes must be booked in advance; each class is run in a group of a maximum of 8 people.

Our beginner’s pottery class takes you through a journey of mixed hand-building techniques in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Each technique will be introduced and explained at the beginning of each class. You will have plenty of time to create and explore.

You are going to use a plastic, smooth Pale Buff stoneware clay. This clay body recipe is a blend of selected low iron clays providing an ideal background for a decorative approach to stoneware ceramics. Silica sand makes it excellent for throwing on the pottery wheel too. This clay firing range is 1120°C - 1280°C.

You will work with clay so it will get messy; please wear clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty. We also advise you not to wear jewellery like rings, bracelets or watches during the class as the clay may get into bits where it cannot be easily removed or they may get scratched.

After you glaze your artwork, it needs to go back into the kiln for a final firing. Please note that it may take up to 2 or 3 weeks until you can actually collect your artwork. You will be notified by email once it's ready for collection. Kindly note we will keep hold of your artwork made at the studio for 14 days after artwork collection email confirmation. You must claim and collect your artwork within this time frame, otherwise, it will be donated to our local charity.

You can sign up again for the same class If you want to have a better understanding of the techniques or the shapes you’ve learned. However, if you feel confident working by yourself and you are familiar with the good studio practice, want to practice more and refine your pottery throwing techniques, we suggest you sign up for our nine weeks intermediate to advanced pottery class.
